Number 17 - half way there
This was a great idea for a present, as my wee one was turning 1 but Lord it was a bad read, sorry Janie! Poorly written and depicting the child as horribly knowing and cunning and not altogether pleasant. I didn't recognize my gorgeous Teddy in it at all.
OH NO! The clues were all there why oh why oh why did I pick this up???? Young daughter abducted and murdered and father spends a weekend in a shack trying to come to terms with this with (wait for it) God, Jesus and The Holy Spirit!!! I kid you not! If you're interested God appears in the guise of a West Indian woman whilst Jesus rocks up as a carpenter. Holy Moly!
HOORAY! Loved it! I read the first of Jennifer Worth's books 'Call the Midwife' and I loved her style. She is a natural storyteller and here she tells the story of a lost generation. Fresh, moving, fascinating, well written. It's a keeper.
This was OK, a well written coming of age novel, enjoyable but ultimately forgettable.
I love historical 'faction' It is my guilty literary secret. But I feel a bit better about it now that I know that it isn't an easy thing to write. A week with Phillipa Gregory and you are living and breathing the Tudor court whereas this just doesn't do it. It never steps off the page. A beach read - 'chick lit' goes BC
